Family History | Thomas L Waterman was born c1850 in Poplar, East London. The
1881 census records him as being a 30 year old unmarried builder living with his widowed
mother, Mary Ann, and two younger brothers in Mile End Old Town, London. By the time of the 1891 census, Thomas Waterman had married and had moved to the IOW. The census records him as being a 40 year old photographer living at High St, Shanklin. Along with Thomas were his London born wife, Julia age 25, and 3 year old son, also named Thomas. The fact that his son was born in Sydenham, South London infers that the family didn't arrive on the Island until after c1887. By the time of the 1901 census, the family had left the Island and was living in Lewisham, South London - Thomas Waterman then being described as a furniture dealer. Since he wasn't listed in Kelly's 1898 or 1899 IOW Directories, it is likely that the family left the Island no later than 1897. |
