Family History | Henry Morris was born c1871 in Ryde, the son of a coal
merchant George Morris and his wife Ellen, both of whom were also from Ryde. At the time
of the 1881 census the family was living at West View, West Street, Ryde, where 9 year old
Henry was the second youngest of seven children. By the time of the 1891 census the family had moved to Well Street, Ryde, and Henry's occupation was stated to be that of an employed photographer. The fact that no evidence of his photographic career has been found to date in trade directories, etc, suggests that Henry probably worked for one of the several established studios in the area. In any event, his photographic career may have been short-lived, as the 1901 census records a Henry Morris of right age and birthplace working in Ryde as a shoe maker. |

Further Notes | It is possible that Henry's photographic activities inspired the photographer Charles Linden to take up the career as they were close neighbours in 1891. |
