Family History | Elizabeth Zilpha Mentor was born at
Stepney, London c1862,
but was brought up by her grandparents in Cheltenham.
The 1881 census records Elizabeth as a 19 year old general housekeeper
assistant living with her widowed grandmother, Zilpha Sirett, and several
other family members at Broxted House in Cheltenham. Elizabeth trained in photography at Cheltenham, but started her own business in Southampton about 1890. The 1891 census records Elizabeth boarding with the Tyrell family at South Stoneham, Southampton, but no occupation is shown. Elizabeth developed a network of branches on the south coast which included the following: 9 Oxford Road, Southampton In 1894, Elizabeth married William Hillmer and settled in Southampton. William had been born in Islington, London c1849 and was the former owner of the Brighton branch. At the time of the 1901 census, the couple were living at Portswood, Southampton, and had a daughter Dora aged 5. Whilst William's occupation was recorded as a photographer (employer) in the census, Elizabeth's was once again left blank. Other branches in Elizabeth's company included Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Cheltenham, Coventry, Kidderminster and Barrow in Furness. My thanks to Alan and Elizabeth Booth of Cheltenham for contributing to the above history. |
